Apparently I was an idiot and couldn't do basic auth correctly, because once I did that correctly it worked fine without anonymous access involved. I am using Java 8, and the Authenticator class to set the authentication on my URL globally. Hope this helps the next person coming along.

Please disregard now. It's all working fine. Someone changed the issues I was seeing in Jira yesterday and moved them to another release, incorrectly, at about the same time I was viewing them. I got the legacy aspect figured out as well so all of future configs should be non-legacy. Thanks.

If the JIRA release operation should happen anywhere other than when the release is deployed in BuildMaster (i.e. using the event listener), you'll have to add a custom action or use PowerShell, etc. Alternatively you could fork https://github.com/Inedo/bmx-jira and add it that way, here is the tutorial for that: http://inedo.com/support/tutorials/cloning-and-patching-an-inedo-extension
