Using networkservice as service user

  • Hello,

I have tried to install ProGet by default using the NetworkService account to start the service but it doesn't work (service won't start).
So I have temporarily configured the administrator account to succeed in starting it.

I would like to know how to use the NetworkService account to avoid using the local administrator account for the ProGet service.

    Thank you in advance.

  • I think you found same issue like me, you probably need to grant read permission for NetworkService to C:\ProgramData\Inedo and C:\ProgramData\ProGet . You may also need to do the same if you do any other data storage. The Installer does not add the read permission.

    Hi @reseau_6272 and @aristo_4359,

Thanks for reporting this. The installer does add write permission to those directories but not read, I suppose under the (invalid?) assumption that all users by default have read access to there already. I've created PG-3112 to track this - we will likely have it fixed in this week's release (2025.10) or possibly 205.11 in two weeks.

  • Thank you, however I am not sure since I have not retested the installation, from my memory, it does not seems to add write permission either for my local (windows 11), as I was not seeing the Network Service there initially and had to add manually add network service. Same case in a separate testing server (Windows Server 2025 Standard). If you see that in older Windows may be because in later windows this behavior is changed, but not sure.

Thanks for the further info - I'll make sure we retest with Server 2025.
